TYPO3 Responsive Facelift & TYPO3 Support for VGF
Everyone is coming along
The Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) is the transport company for the city of Frankfurt and ensures mobility in the region with over 400 rail vehicles on nine underground and ten tram lines. It is responsible for infrastructure, safety, cleanliness, service and reliable operation.
VGF has been a long-standing customer of our digital agency since 2008. During this time, we have implemented the website relaunch, regular TYPO3 upgrades and SEO optimisations for the website, as well as providing technical support. A particular focus was always placed on accessibility, modern, user-friendly web design and information architecture. Our collaboration with VGF takes place in agile sprints – efficient, collaborative and solution-oriented.
Requirement:
With more than 160 million passengers annually, Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) is a guarantor of mobility in the Main metropolis. In order to underline its claim as an innovative and reliable mobility partner on the web as well, the company website was to be modernised in terms of technology and design as part of a facelift and also be fully accessible and usable on mobile devices.
Solution:
The focus of the facelift was on making the website responsive. All content can now be accessed equally well and conveniently on all common internet-enabled devices. All navigation elements are touch-optimised. Thanks to a revised information architecture and the integration of a quick selection feature, all relevant information can now be accessed even faster. The information modules have also been comprehensively revised. These provide quick and comprehensive information about planned and unexpected disruptions and provide real-time information on barrier-free travel (escalators & lifts). A social media newsroom also bundles the numerous social web activities of the VGF.

Current service announcements
VGF now provides information and operational announcements about current disruptions, which are often requested by its customers, directly on its homepage. Here, users can find information at a glance about unplanned disruptions caused by accidents, severe weather, etc., as well as disruptions caused by planned measures such as track work, construction sites or events on individual lines.
Previously, planned and unplanned disruptions on underground and tram lines were recorded differently and displayed in different places on the website.
With the application developed specifically for VGF in Ruby on Rails, all planned and unplanned disruptions are now recorded centrally via the disruption tool and displayed in a bundled, filterable view directly on the VGF homepage. In the event of a disruption, users can conveniently navigate to a details page with further information by clicking on the relevant link.
One framework template – three websites
Ebbelwei-Express, Responsive Facelift
Get to know the city while sitting comfortably in the tram and enjoying a refreshing glass of Ebbelwei. Every year, around 300,000 passengers get to know Frankfurt in this particularly quaint way. To ensure that passengers can enjoy not only the ride on the Ebbelwei Express, but also the Ebbelwei Express website without restriction, it was to be made accessible on mobile devices and visually modernised as part of a responsive facelift.
The Ebbelwei-Expreß website has been consistently adapted to the requirements of a predominantly mobile target group. Based on TYPO3 CMS, the website was implemented responsively and designed in accordance with the Ebbelwei-Expreß colour specifications. The trilingual audio podcast (German, Hessian, English) was implemented using an HTML5 audio player and also optimised for mobile devices.
SBEV, Launch Responsive Website
Stadtbahn Europaviertel Projektbaugesellschaft mbH (SBEV) is a subsidiary of VGF (51%) and the City of Frankfurt am Main (49%). SBEV is responsible for project management and implementation of the »Extension of the U5 light rail line« project.
The website answers questions about the extension of the U5 to the Europaviertel district and will report on the progress of the construction work in the construction diary and via webcams until the four new stops (one underground station at Güterplatz and three above-ground stations at Emser Brücke, Europagarten and Wohnpark) are put into operation.
The website was set up in the existing TYPO3 backend of the VGF and uses the same templates and content elements. Graphically, it was given a new colour scheme and minor adjustments were made to individual elements.
