TYPO3 website relaunch for Germanistik im Netz
Research portal and digital services
The German Studies portal »germanistik-im-netz.de« is the new online portal of the Fachinformationsdienstes (FID)(German Studies Subject Information Service) and will replace the Virtuelle Fachbibliothek Germanistik (virtual German Studies library) in future. The FID Germanistik is being set up at the Johann Christian Senckenberg University Library in Frankfurt am Main. For philological practice, a corresponding service for publishing, information, research and scholarship is to be created, reflecting the breadth of the subject.
Requirement:
The requirement of the Frankfurt University Library and the Fachinformationsdienstes Germanistik (German Studies Specialist Information Service) was to set up the new FID Germanistik (German Studies) online portal based on the previous online portal from 2006. The aim was to set up the system centrally so that all essential information on German studies could be brought together under a uniform interface. The integration of heterogeneous data sources and full-text search with faceting was to be taken into account. The provision of a purchase suggestion form and cooperation partners, as well as the provision of information on the integrated data sources, profiles, information on publishing in »GiNDok« and via OJS, was to be ensured.
Solution:
t3quick, version 7.2.0, with the standard package version 11, was used as the basis for developing the new online portal. In addition, the third-party extension amt_feed_importer was installed, which displays RSS feeds from external sources. The extensions ubffm_publications and gin_web_directory were also created and expanded.
The ubffm_publications extension was developed last year for the relaunch of the avldigital.de website. It has now been generalised and revised so that the functions and configurations can be used for both projects. The extension indexes various external data sources with Solr and now outputs over 4.3 million data records. Currently, for example, the UB FFM specialist catalogue, the German National Library and the TextGrid Repository, as well as the joint network index with a 27 GB xml file, are indexed. The gin_web_directory extension has a lot of synergy with the »Vernetzen« (Networking) module from the avldigital.de project, which could be used. Many of the functions were optimised and developed for the specific needs of GiN. This so-called "web directory" is a directory of selected websites, as well as subject-specific online information. It bundles the most important projects and websites on topics, texts, authors and tools that can be submitted via the website and, after approval, are output in the directory.
The customer specified the adjustments to colours and logo according to their preferences. The t3quick layout was minimally adjusted. Support was provided for the design of the content presentation in TYPO3. The website was implemented in collaboration with our customer in agile 2-week sprints. The development goals and deadlines were jointly developed and agreed upon in a kick-off meeting. The sprint events »Review, Retrospektive and Planning«  were held every two weeks at the dkd offices. This resulted in close communication with our customer, and the sprint goals were jointly developed and achieved.
The relaunch site, based on the t3quick package, was made available to the client in July 2019. This allowed them to maintain content and edit the site. The go-live then took place in close cooperation with the infrastructure manager of the university library.
