Accessible responsive website relaunch for the BSBH
We want to be seen!
The Blinden- und Sehbehindertenbund in Hessen e. V. (BSBH) (Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Hesse) is a self-help organisation for blind and visually impaired people in Hesse. Its advice centres and 10 district groups offer free, independent advice to anyone on a range of topics relating to eye diseases, treatment options, visual impairment, blindness, educational/vocational integration, etc.
»We want to be seen« – inclusive instead of exclusive.
Requirement:
The Self-Help Organisation for the Blinden und Sehbehinderten in Hessen (BSBH) (Blind and Visually Impaired in Hesse) commissioned us with the project of relaunching their responsive website, with a clear focus on accessibility. There were some fundamental requirements to be taken into account:
- A BITV score of at least 90 points had to be achieved.
- An expert opinion from the Technical University of Central Hesse (THM) was to be prepared after project completion.
- The specifications of Leserlich.info had to be complied with.
The objectives of the project: To make key information on medicine, law, aids, lifestyle, etc. easier to find for blind and visually impaired people and their relatives; to simplify contact with local self-help groups; to ensure consistent accessibility of the website, smartphone compatibility, attractiveness through good design even for sighted people, opportunities for participation through interactivity, addressing different groups of affected people in the spirit of diversity. As part of an IA workshop, the presentation and use were developed and we created the concept and web design using prototyping. In addition, we were asked to develop a digital membership form and an extension for making appointments.
Solution:
Based on t3quick, this project paid particular attention to the specific wishes and requirements of accessibility, both technically and in terms of the overall design development.
We developed an appointment management extension and a digital membership form, which was designed to create a paperless registration process for new members via an accessible front-end editing system. For appointment management, attention was also paid to the editing of various subgroups in the BSBH environment (various district groups). A special, accessible rights and roles concept was developed for this purpose. The excellent accessibility of the site, which was also confirmed by the THM (Technical University of Central Hesse), is particularly noteworthy in this project. A BITV score of 98 out of 100 possible points was achieved here.
